Swindon Youth Festival of Literature - Celebration Event

LitFest 24 came to a close with a Celebration Event at Pattern Church for our prize winners and their families, many of whom arrived into the venue via helter-skelter slide, rather than the conventional stairs!  Mayor Shaikh awarded the prizes which were generously sponsored by Bower Bailey Solicitors, Bert’s Books, WHSmiths, and Browns Books for Students. Our students received book vouchers in recognition of their wonderful achievement in creative writing, poetry and services to the library. Congratulations to Isla, Laiba and Rhys.

Year 11 Hospitality and Catering Trip to Lucknam Park

Year 11 Hospitality and Catering students embarked on an exciting trip to the 1 Michelin Star, 3 Michelin Keyed Lucknam Park. Whilst at Lucknam, we were immersed into life within the industry both front of house and in the kitchen brigade. We toured the luxurious grounds, prestigious rooms and well equipped kitchens, ending our tour with a masterclass by Head Chef, Hywel Jones who demonstrated how to fillet a whole Halibut, make tagliatelle and garnish a plate for the ultimate fine dining experience, which students then enjoyed tasting. This masterclass was followed by a Mocktail making workshop, lunch and a Q&A with Chef Hywel, the Bar Manager and Restaurant Manager, where they learnt about careers, life behind the scenes and motivation to work within the industry. A really special experience for our Year 11 students, who are hopefully feeling inspired for their exam dishes and have developed their knowledge for their unit 1 exam.

Year 9 Geography Trip to Portsmouth

On the 26th and 27th November, The Geography Department took 180 students on a trip to Gunwharf Quays Portsmouth to investigate the regeneration of the historic dockyard and consider the impacts on the area using primary data collection techniques, something that will be essential if they go onto study geography at GCSE and/or A level.

Highlights of the trip included going up the Spinnaker Tower to see the wonderful views across the Solent and the transport methods in the area which will support their learning about urban environments and globalisation. They also took a boat trip around Portsmouth Harbour which showed students about the sense of place and the Naval heritage.

Overall, students were a pleasure to have on the trip, they seemed to enjoy linking geographical concepts to real places and having some time in a new environment. It was a brilliant day!

Thank you to all the staff that supported us and allowed students to have this opportunity.

New from the ASC SRP

Beale Park

The students from Silver Block visited Beale park and saw their unique collection of rare and endangered birds, with animal favourites including monkeys, prairie dogs, meerkats, raccoons, coati, lemurs and wallabies.

Avebury Stones

The students from Silver Block visited Avebury Stones as part of their ASDAN programme and found out some information about the site.

The Avebury complex is one of the principal ceremonial sites of Neolithic Britain that we can visit today. It was built and altered over many centuries from about 2850 BC until about 2200 BC and is one of the largest, and undoubtedly the most complex, of Britain's surviving Neolithic Henge monument

Avebury Henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the Henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village.
