Ridgeway School Student Council

The important of the School Council

Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) states that every child has the right to express their views, feelings, and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. One way to achieve this is through an effective school council; a system that allows students to make meaningful changes within their school and local community. School councils bring about positive change in our classrooms, around our school, and beyond (into the community), whilst giving students the opportunity to lead change and amplify their voices for a safer, inclusive school.

Role and Aims of Ridgeway School Council

Ridgeway School Council provides an inclusive platform to empower students to take an active role, through collaboration with staff, governors, parents and the local community, in order to create positive and meaningful change within and beyond our school.

Students have the opportunity and inspiration, through their collective voice, to make a difference through sharing their views and putting forward their ideas. This amplifies student voices for a safer, inclusive school, by improving a range of aspects of school life. Students are part of developing aims and making decisions about the day-to-day and long-term running of the school.

The Ridgeway School Council has 4 Focus groups, which concentrate on key areas:

  • Teaching and learning
  • Facilities and Environment (including Eco)
  • Enrichment, trips and events (including Community)
  • Culture and behaviour (including Anti-bullying and Well-being)

We focus on solutions rather than issues, to find a good balance between the positives and the areas we need to work on.
